It's OK... Circle 3 #2: Promissory Notes
07 juli 2023
17:00 – 19:00h
Public conversation @oudekerkamsterdam

‘Promissory Notes’ will be a dramaturgy of the philosophical, practical and speculative standpoints of 20 creative practitioners and educators - based in Netherlands- in an attempt to  question the different renderings of value we have inherited under the global material condition. The material condition here is the continuous expropriation of our labor and spaces under the unfolding entanglement of the political architecture - that is shaping our practices - with the material architecture of habitability of roles and the spaces we exist in. This condition continuously presents us with contradictory strains on how we perform habitability. What do people do to reflect on their practice and also survive their practice? Whilst questioning what it means to inhabit roles, spaces, ethics, ideas - we situate the legal term ‘Promissory notes’  to speak to the underlying coercion in agreeing to lend our time, labor and values to certain jobs, ideologies that will never pay us back. 20 artists will be stationed in different parts of the architecture of the church, reiterating moments of promises never met, disappointments, analysis, discussions and climaxes of emotions.

Ola Hassanain invites guests Annette Krauss, Jota Mombaça, and Clare Butcher with eva susova, Arnisa Zeqo, Annelies Kamen, Daniel Aguilar Ruvalcaba, Rajyashri Goody, Simnikiwe Buhlungu, Winnie Herbstein, Polina Medvedeva and Yun Choi to offer to create a topography inside the church that capture the deep-seatedness of such unfulfilled promises, on what it means to be part and parcel of uninhabitability and operate on disappointment. This conversation is a candid interaction where we talk about what in our practices that seem to recreate the social structures that we critique. We have been discussing sentiments where we fear that our contributions in our work perpetuate the cycles of impossibilities. What does it mean to be left with all the debt of promissory notes?
