Constellations ° Assemblies Online Event Programme

upprojects.com/the-hall/, Mar 2022

Taking place between March and November 2022, Constellations ° Assemblies are a series of free online events open to all artists, curators and practitioners active and/or interested in the expanded field of public art. The programme will explore several urgent lines of enquiry and the events will provide attendees with the opportunity to learn more about contemporary, socially engaged art and public art debates in relation to the lines of enquiry. These will be shaped around the following questions: Is context only half the work? How can socially engaged practice inspire structural change? What is the role of democracy in social practice - can all voices be heard? How can we move beyond sustainability? How can we rethink the memorial?

The Assemblies will take place within UP Projects’ digital participation space, The Hall involving a range of UK and international speakers.

The programme is part of Constellations, that offers free learning and development opportunities for artists, curators, producers, and practitioners operating in the expanded field of public art. It is developed and curated by UP Projects, working in partnership with Flat Time House and Liverpool Biennial.

Part of Constellations ° Assemblies

Join us for our first event as part of Constellations ° Assemblies, a series of free online events curated and delivered by UP Projects in partnership with Flat Time House and Liverpool Biennial. The events are open to all artists, curators and practitioners active and/or interested in the expanded field of public art.
Conceived by Barbara Steveni in the 1960s, the Artist Placement Group was an organisation that actively sought to reposition the role of the artist within a wider social context. Building on this legacy, we will explore what context means today, how to take social conditions, politics, history, and geography into account when producing work, and what methods and approaches can be considered to understand and embed work in new contexts.

Is context only half the work? is moderated by Gavin Wade, Artist-Curator at Eastside Projects. Speakers include Jeanne van Heeswijk, visual artist and curator and Arman Nouri, Director of Kin Structures and Programme Manager, Culture & Community Spaces at Risk at the Greater London Authority.

All Constellations ° Assemblies will take place in The Hall, UP Projects’ digital participation space.
